Is it possible that racism isn't just used to make people feel inferior, but to make those who aren't in power feel less human than those who are? Is it possible that institutionalized racism is still in place for this reason? Look up phrases like "redlining" and "white flight" and think on that for a bit.

I think it show's a lot about Huck Finn. that he has more awareness than both the Widow Douglas and his sister, who are far more educated than he is. The fact that Huck is begining to change his attitude toward slavery, and his closeness to Jim shows that he really isn't this bad person that everyone sees him to be, and that if people forgot about the law on never allowing a slave to escape, they would find Huck to be a very interesting and special person.

I think the N word had a very derogatory meaning back then as well as today. However, I don't think it was as harsh, it was used frequently and was not uncommon to hear a white person call a black person that. There were also a few other terms that today would be considered racist, such as, colored, negroe and a few others.

I was also confused at what the meaning of the N word was for Jim. I agree that racism is a way to offend people, but I also feel like it's used somewhat as an excuse for not getting something. Not just race, but disabilities and gender as well. Sort of like what Anna said, people can blame something like not getting a job on race.

I agree that racism is used as a way to make fell people inferior. But in todays world I notice that racism is also used as a way of blame. If a black person is laid off from a job today, he or she sometimes will claim the only reason they got laid was becuase of their color. Which is most likely not the case. I seem to think that in todays world there is not much racism, but because of the past mistakes of other whites, blacks may still feel that whites see them as inferior.

I agree how Scary Movie is only making fun of stupid things that no one is going to truly think about, while Borat brings up issues that, while we are all laughing about, we are also sitting in our seats thinking about how horrible it is. And I didn't find Team America hard to watch, I actually found it funny, but now that I look back to it I was laughing at something that I should have seen as offensive.

Yeah, Team America was tough to watch--part of what Parker and Stone do in their movies (and on South Park) is satirize, or at least provoke, people's reactions to offensive content. And while I'm pretty okay with offensive comment, I have to draw the line somewhere.

great title! You make a great point in stating, "Sadaam Hussein was only able to enforce his will through overwhelming military force and ruthless suppression. The coalition forces do not have an overwhelming military presence in Iraq and cannot resort to the brutal behavior of Sadaam’s forces." A democracy established by America is unlikely to fit the Iraqi people at this tiime in history. Is America forcing a situation that is doomed to fail?

Julia I am aswell reading The Scarlett Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I have not begun reading the book yet, but I'm very excited to read it. After reading what you have said about the book I realized that i had picked a very good book to read. I very much enjoy reading books where you feel as if you know the character. I am able to relate more to the character, and understand the book as well as what the author is trying to bring across. Since i have learned that the authors use their characters to express there points, and it only makes there points clearer when you understand the character as a best friend. And it seems as if you have realized the same thing, becuase when you state that, "the plot unravels itself whilst the characters deal with their situations," it shows that the plot is based around the characters.
